Target Information
In the presence of calcium ions, pulmonary surfactant-associated protein A binds to surfactant phospholipids, helping to reduce surface tension at the air-liquid interface in the alveoli of mammalian lungs, which is essential for normal respiration. It also enhances the expression of MYO18A/SP-R210 on alveolar macrophages. In mice, SFTPA1 is primarily involved in innate immune defense, regulating lung structure and function, and controlling gene expression. As a vital member of the pulmonary surfactant protein A gene family, SFTPA1 works alongside SFTPA2 in defending the lungs' innate immune system. The absence of SFTPA1 increases mice's susceptibility to infections, underscoring its crucial role in maintaining lung health and defending against pathogen invasion.
