Target Information
Sulfotransferase 1A1 is an enzyme that uses 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) as a sulfonate donor to catalyze the sulfate conjugation of various acceptor molecules containing hydroxyl or amine groups. This sulfonation process enhances the water solubility of most compounds, facilitating their renal excretion, but can also lead to bioactivation, resulting in the formation of active metabolites. Sult1a1, a member of the sulfur transferase family, primarily mediates the sulfation of both endogenous and exogenous compounds, transferring sulfate groups to substrates to facilitate their excretion or conversion to non-toxic forms. In mice, methyleugenol forms DNA adducts through the catalytic action of Sult1a1, causing hepatocyte damage. Additionally, 1-Methoxy-3-indolylmethanol (1-MIM) forms DNA adducts in mice via Sult1a1, and its levels are significantly diminished in Sult1a1 knockout mice.
