Target Information

3-oxo-5-alpha-steroid 4-dehydrogenase 2 is responsible for converting testosterone (T) into 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and progesterone or corticosterone into their corresponding 5-alpha-3-oxosteroids. This enzyme plays a crucial role in sexual differentiation and androgen physiology. In mouse embryonic development, SRD5A2 is particularly important for the formation of reproductive organs, such as the penis and urethra, facilitating their masculinization by converting testosterone into the more potent DHT. For instance, studies have revealed that mice lacking SRD5A2 (Srd5a2 KO) exhibit significant abnormalities in the development of external genitalia. However, these abnormalities may be partially offset by increased testosterone levels in the body, leading to variances in phenotypic expression.
