Target Information

The proton-coupled zinc antiporter SLC30A4 is likely a proton-coupled zinc ion antiporter that facilitates zinc import from the cytoplasm, possibly into the endocytic compartment, and is involved in controlling zinc deposition in milk. In mice, SLC30A4 is crucial for several functions, including regulating zinc homeostasis in macrophages, maintaining lactation in the mammary gland, participating in immune responses, and influencing other physiological processes. Mutations in the SLC30A4 gene have been linked to acrodermatitis enteropathica, a rare autosomal recessive disorder in humans characterized by severe zinc deficiency symptoms. Studies in mouse models further emphasize the essential role of SLC30A4 in zinc absorption and utilization.
