Target Information
sFlt-1 is a naturally occurring antagonist of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that inhibits angiogenesis by binding to VEGF, thereby preventing its interaction with receptors. This effect has been confirmed in mouse models. Studies have demonstrated that sFlt-1 is expressed in the mouse placenta, where it can inhibit placental angiogenesis and spiral artery remodeling, leading to placental dysfunction and restricted embryonic development. Additionally, sFlt-1 enhances its anti-angiogenic effects by binding to placental growth factor (PlGF). In mouse models, the overexpression of sFlt-1 is closely linked to the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. Research has shown that increased sFlt-1 levels can cause maternal endothelial dysfunction, resulting in hypertension, proteinuria, and placental hypoperfusion, which align with the clinical manifestations of preeclampsia in humans.
