Target Information
The Sodium- and chloride-dependent GABA transporter 1, encoded by the Slc6a1 gene in mice, facilitates the transport of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) along with sodium and chloride ions, playing a key role in the reuptake of GABA from the synapse. However, GABA may also be translocated in the opposite direction, resulting in its release. The direction and extent of GABA transport are dictated by the prevailing thermodynamic conditions, which depend on the membrane potential and the intracellular and extracellular concentrations of Na+, Cl-, and GABA.
