Target Information

The serotonin transporter (SERT) in mice plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological and behavioral processes, including mood, intestinal function, neurotransmitter balance, and behavioral responses. In the absence of SERT, mice exhibit heightened anxiety-like behaviors, such as reduced exploratory activity and increased escape responses in tests like the light-dark box. Additionally, SERT deficiency disrupts high-affinity serotonin (5-HT) uptake in the intestine, leading to abnormal intestinal motility characterized by alternating episodes of diarrhea and constipation. These findings highlight the broad impact of SERT on both brain and gut function in mice.
