Target Information
Serine palmitoyltransferase 3 is an integral part of the serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT) enzyme complex, which drives the initial and rate-limiting step in sphingolipid biosynthesis by condensing L-serine with activated acyl-CoA, most commonly palmitoyl-CoA, to create long-chain bases. The SPT complex includes SPTLC1, SPTLC2 or SPTLC3, and SPTSSA or SPTSSB. In mouse liver, the expression of Sptlc3 is closely linked to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In a NAFLD mouse model induced by a high-fat diet, Sptlc3 expression was significantly elevated and associated with the progression of liver fibrosis and liver cancer.
