Target Information

Selenoprotein P may contribute to extracellular antioxidant defense through its selenium content or facilitate the transport of selenium, potentially supplying it to organs like the brain and testis. In mice, Selenoprotein P serves various functions, including targeted selenium transport, antioxidant defense, neuroprotection, and maintaining reproductive health. It is the most prevalent selenoprotein in plasma, primarily responsible for transporting selenium from the liver to target tissues, such as the brain and testes. Research has shown that Selenoprotein P accomplishes this delivery via its selenium-rich C-terminal region, which is abundant in cysteine. For instance, mice lacking the selenoprotein P gene exhibit significantly reduced selenium levels in the brain and testis, while liver selenium levels remain relatively high. Moreover, the absence of Selenoprotein P causes an imbalance in systemic selenium levels, particularly in the brain and testes, underscoring its crucial role in targeted selenium transport.
