Target Information
Protein S100-B is a small protein that binds both zinc and calcium, with high expression in astrocytes, making it one of the most abundant soluble proteins in the brain. It binds zinc with high affinity and calcium with low affinity, featuring distinct binding sites for each ion on every monomer. In mice, S100-B protein is involved in neuroprotection, inflammation regulation, cell migration, chemotaxis, and serves as a biomarker. S100-B also plays a significant role in inflammation and immune response. For instance, in traumatic brain injury (TBI) models, changes in S100-B levels are closely linked to the expression of inflammatory factors like IL-6, IL-8, and MMP-9. Additionally, naloxone usage can reduce S100-B levels in the brain after TBI, suggesting S100-B's protective role may be through the inhibition of the inflammatory response.
