Target Information

Protein S100-A16 is a calcium-binding protein that binds one calcium ion per monomer. It plays a crucial role in regulating lipid metabolism in the mouse liver. Research indicates that mice overexpressing S100A16 develop more severe fatty liver when on a high-fat diet (HFD), with higher serum triglyceride levels and increased lipid droplet accumulation. Additionally, S100A16 knockout mice demonstrate an ability to mitigate alcohol-induced fatty liver damage, a process linked to the upregulation of midbrain astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF). Beyond these effects, S100A16 is also involved in various physiological and pathological processes, including neurodegenerative diseases, inflammatory responses, and immune regulation.
