Target Information
Rhodopsin is a photoreceptor essential for image-forming vision at low light levels and is crucial for the viability of photoreceptor cells after birth. In mice, rhodopsin's function is intrinsically linked to its role in retinal rod photoreceptors. The expression level of rhodopsin directly influences the morphology and function of rod cell outer segments. In heterozygous mutant mice (Rho+/−), a 50% reduction in rhodopsin expression results in a 30-40% reduction in the length and a 20% reduction in the diameter of rod cell outer segments, leading to decreased density of the outer segment membrane disks.
