Target Information
Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is responsible for transporting retinol in blood plasma, moving it from liver stores to peripheral tissues. It transfers bound all-trans retinol to STRA6, enabling retinol to pass through cell membranes. In mice, RBP4 primarily functions as adiponectin, regulating metabolism, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease risk, while also playing a role in vitamin A transport. In obese mouse models, RBP4 expression is significantly elevated, showing a positive correlation with insulin resistance indices. Moreover, RBP4 influences glucose uptake in adipocytes by regulating the expression of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4).
