Target Information

In mice, ALDH1A2 serves multiple critical functions, including neuroprotection, retinol (RA) metabolism, stem cell regulation, and organ development. Within the spinal cord, ALDH1A2 expression is intimately connected to neuron survival, showing high presence in the white matter predominantly within astrocytes, microglia, oligodendrocytes, and neurons. In the context of an ALS model, a decline in ALDH1A2 levels can compromise its antioxidant and neuroprotective roles, resulting in neuronal degeneration. ALDH1A2 is essential for retinol (RA) synthesis, as it activates retinol dehydrogenase (RALDH2) to transform retinal into retinoic acid (RA). This acid is crucial for embryonic development, organ formation, and immune regulation. For instance, in mice, the absence of ALDH1A2 leads to embryonic death after 8.5 days, underscoring its vital role in retinol metabolism.
