Target Information
Reelin is an extracellular matrix serine protease secreted by pioneer neurons, essential for orchestrating the layering of neurons in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum by guiding cell positioning during neurodevelopment. It regulates microtubule dynamics in neurons and facilitates neuronal migration. Reelin plays a pivotal role in the development and maturation of the mouse brain, influencing processes such as neuronal migration, synapse formation, neural circuit organization, adult neuroplasticity, and neuroprotection. Mice deficient in Reelin exhibit significant abnormalities in cortical stratification, including thickening of the granule cell layer and the absence of the interneuron layer. In adulthood, Reelin continues to be crucial, not only for neuronal migration but also for synapse formation and the intricate organization of neural circuits.
