In mice, the β subunit of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC) plays a crucial role in converting pyruvate into acetyl-CoA and carbon dioxide (CO2), linking the glycolysis pathway to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. This conversion is a vital step in cellular energy metabolism, supplying ATP and supporting various metabolic activities. In the mitochondria of mouse skeletal muscle, the E1 component of PDC (comprising α and β subunits) is significantly enriched, underscoring its importance in muscle energy metabolism. Additionally, research indicates that PDC activity is regulated by pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDHK), which modulates pyruvate metabolism by inhibiting PDC activity.
