Target Information
In mice, the primary function of pyruvate carboxylase (PC) is as a crucial metabolic enzyme involved in several biochemical pathways. PC is a biotin-dependent enzyme located in the mitochondria that catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate and bicarbonate into oxaloacetate, an essential component of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle). Additionally, PC plays a vital role in regulating gluconeogenesis, lipogenesis, neurotransmitter synthesis, and insulin secretion. In the liver of mice, PC supports gluconeogenesis by replenishing TCA cycle intermediates, such as oxaloacetate, which is a critical precursor for glucose production. Through the catalytic activity of PC, pyruvate can be transported from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm, facilitating glucose synthesis.
