Target Information
The Purinergic Receptor P2X, a Ligand-Gated Ion Channel 7, is encoded by the P2rx7 gene in mice. This receptor for ATP functions as a ligand-gated ion channel and facilitates ATP-dependent lysis of macrophages by forming membrane pores that allow large molecules to pass through. It may play a role in both rapid synaptic transmission and ATP-mediated lysis of antigen-presenting cells. In the absence of its natural ligand, ATP, it acts as a scavenger receptor, helping in the recognition and engulfment of apoptotic cells.
