Target Information

Protocadherin-15 is a cell-adhesion protein that depends on calcium and is essential for the development of neuroepithelial cells in the inner ear and proper cochlear function. It is also likely involved in maintaining normal retinal function. This protein plays significant roles in mice, including crucial functions in hearing and balance perception, regulation of retinal health, and various other biological processes within the nervous system. Mutations in the Pcdh15 gene in mice can cause abnormalities at the apex connection, resulting in auditory and vestibular dysfunction. For instance, the Ames waltzer mutant mouse, which serves as a model for Pcdh15 gene mutations, displays severe hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction.
