Target Information
The 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase catalytic subunit alpha-1 serves as the catalytic component of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which functions as an energy sensor protein kinase crucial for managing cellular energy metabolism. When intracellular ATP levels decrease, AMPK is activated to stimulate energy-producing pathways while suppressing energy-consuming processes, such as protein, carbohydrate, and lipid biosynthesis, as well as cell growth and proliferation. In vascular endothelial cells, PRKA1 helps protect mice from atherosclerosis by regulating glycolysis and maintaining the integrity of the endothelial barrier. Studies indicate that the loss of PRKA1 diminishes glycolysis and hastens atherosclerosis, whereas increasing PRKA1 expression through gene therapy can restore glycolysis and reduce the incidence of atherosclerosis.
