Target Information
CD59, also known as Protectin, is a glycoprotein that serves as a potent inhibitor of the complement membrane attack complex (MAC). It functions by binding to the C8 and/or C9 components of the assembling MAC, thus preventing the incorporation of multiple C9 copies necessary for the full formation of the osmolytic pore. In mice, CD59 is encoded by two genes: mCD59a and mCD59b. mCD59a is broadly expressed across various tissues and cell types, including endothelial cells, red blood cells, and platelets, acting as a key regulator of the terminal complement pathway. Meanwhile, mCD59b is predominantly expressed in testicular germ cells and mature sperm and may have additional physiological roles.
