Target Information

In mice, pro-neurotensin/neuromedin N (pro-NT/NM) serves as a crucial neuropeptide precursor involved in various physiological and pathological processes. Produced by the pancreas and colon, pro-NT/NM is processed into two active peptides: neurotensin (NT) and neuromedin N (NM), through tissue-specific mechanisms involving different pro-peptide hydrolases such as PC1, PC2, and PC5, each exhibiting unique specificities and activities across tissues. For instance, PC1 and PC2 are co-expressed in the mouse brain, facilitating the processing of pro-NT/NM, while PC5 may substitute for PC1 in certain contexts. NT is widely distributed throughout the brain, including regions like the hippocampus, thalamus, and cortex, and plays roles in cognitive function, pain perception, and emotional regulation. Furthermore, NT receptors like NTS1 are present in the mouse brain and, upon binding with NT, can induce inward currents, underscoring their significant role in neural signaling.
