Target Information

The major prion protein is believed to contribute to neuronal development and synaptic plasticity and might be essential for maintaining the neuronal myelin sheath. It may facilitate myelin homeostasis by acting as an agonist for the ADGRG6 receptor. Additionally, it could have a role in iron uptake and maintaining iron homeostasis. In mice, prion protein (PrP) is closely linked to various neurodegenerative diseases. Mutations or abnormal conformations of PrP, such as PrPSc, can cause neurodegenerative changes similar to human conditions like Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, leading to spongiform encephalopathy, neuronal death, and gliosis.
