Target Information

Presenilin-2 is likely a catalytic subunit of the gamma-secretase complex, an endoprotease complex that facilitates the intramembrane cleavage of integral membrane proteins, including Notch receptors and the amyloid-beta precursor protein (APP). Its protease activity is dependent on the presence of the other gamma-secretase complex members. PS2 plays a crucial role in the γ-secretase complex, which processes APP to generate the neurotoxic amyloid beta peptide (Aβ). Research indicates that mutations or loss of PS2 lead to an accumulation of Aβ, a primary pathological feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD). For instance, a notable increase in Aβ42 levels has been observed in PS2 mutant mouse models, aligning with the pathological traits seen in human AD patients.
