Target Information
Pregnancy zone protein (PZP) can inhibit all four classes of proteinases through a unique 'trapping' mechanism. It features a peptide segment known as the 'bait region,' which contains specific cleavage sites for various proteinases. When a proteinase cleaves this bait region, it triggers a conformational change in the protein, trapping the proteinase. Under intermittent fasting (IFR) conditions, the overexpression of PZP significantly enhanced the metabolic health of mice, evidenced by increased activity in brown adipose tissue, elevated expression of UCP1 protein, and upregulated genes related to glucose metabolism. Furthermore, mice lacking PZP (PZP KO) exhibited enlarged adipose tissue, increased lipid accumulation in the liver, and reduced overall energy expenditure, underscoring PZP's vital role in regulating energy metabolism.
