Target Information
Platelet factor 4 is a chemokine released during platelet aggregation that participates in various biological processes, including hematopoiesis, and cell proliferation, differentiation, and activation. It operates through different functional receptors such as CCR1, CXCR3A, or CXCR3B. When interacting with the CXCR3A receptor, it promotes the migration of activated T-lymphocytes via the downstream Ras/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway. In mice, PF4 is involved in several functions such as inflammation, immune regulation, thrombosis, tissue repair, and disease development. Mice deficient in PF4 exhibit protection from local and remote tissue damage following mesenteric ischemia and reperfusion. This protection is achieved independently of the immune system by reducing neutrophil and monocyte infiltration. Furthermore, the expression of PF4 is elevated in intestinal epithelial cells, potentially contributing to immune regulation by modulating the secretion of IgA.
