Placenta Growth Factor (PlGF) is a key growth factor involved in angiogenesis and the growth of endothelial cells, promoting their proliferation and migration. It interacts with the FLT1/VEGFR-1 receptor and also encourages tumor growth. As a member of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family, PlGF possesses significant angiogenic capabilities. In mouse models, overexpression of PlGF results in enhanced vascularization of the skin and placenta, leading to a marked increase in the number and branching of blood vessels, along with increased vascular permeability. The roles of PlGF in mice are complex and varied, including positive contributions to angiogenesis and placental development, yet it may have adverse effects under pathological conditions such as tumors and inflammation.
