Target Information

Phospholipid transfer protein facilitates the transfer of phospholipids and free cholesterol from triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, such as low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), into high-density lipoproteins (HDL). It also mediates the exchange of phospholipids among triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. In mice, the primary role of phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) is in lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, particularly concerning HDL metabolism and reverse cholesterol transport. Research indicates that PLTP-deficient mice, like PLTP knockout mice, exhibit significantly lower HDL levels. In these mice, the HDL particles are rich in cholesterol and cholesterol esters but have low phospholipid content. Additionally, PLTP is involved in remodeling HDL subtypes, including enhancing the formation of pre-β-HDL, an important mediator of reverse cholesterol transport.
