Target Information
Persephin is a growth factor with neurotrophic properties that target mesencephalic dopaminergic and motor neurons. It functions by binding to its coreceptor, GFRA4, which results in the autophosphorylation and activation of the RET receptor. Persephin provides significant neuroprotection in mice, being crucial for the survival of midbrain dopaminergic neurons and spinal motor neurons. In mouse models, injecting recombinant human Persephin prior to ischemia can effectively prevent neuronal cell death. Furthermore, Persephin has demonstrated protective effects on dopaminergic neurons, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent in Parkinson's disease models. Lentivirus-mediated overexpression of Persephin can increase the population of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and improve rotational behavior in mice with Parkinson's disease.
