Persephin is a growth factor with neurotrophic properties that target mesencephalic dopaminergic and motor neurons. It functions by binding to its coreceptor, GFRA4, which results in the autophosphorylation and activation of the RET receptor. Persephin provides significant neuroprotection in mice, being crucial for the survival of midbrain dopaminergic neurons and spinal motor neurons. In mouse models, injecting recombinant human Persephin prior to ischemia can effectively prevent neuronal cell death.
