Target Information

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that serves as a central regulator of lipid metabolism. It is activated by the endogenous ligand 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphocholine (16:0/18:1-GPC) and by oleylethanolamide, a naturally occurring lipid that regulates satiety. PPARα also acts as a receptor for peroxisome proliferators, including hypolipidemic drugs and fatty acids, and regulates the peroxisomal beta-oxidation pathway of fatty acids. In mice, PPARα performs several critical functions, such as regulating lipid metabolism, exerting anti-inflammatory effects, responding to environmental and drug exposures, and participating in tumorigenesis and cell cycle regulation.
