Target Information

Prothymosin α (PTα) is a small, acidic protein that is widely expressed across various mammalian tissues. It plays key roles in cell proliferation, immune regulation, and protection against oxidative stress. In mice, PTα has a broad range of biological functions, including regulating cell proliferation, enhancing immune responses, protecting neurons from damage, and promoting cardiac regeneration. PTα is particularly significant in the immune system, where it stimulates the maturation and differentiation of T cells and boosts cellular immune responses. For instance, in mice vaccinated with an HBV DNA vaccine, PTα acts as an adjuvant, significantly increasing the titer and positive rate of anti-HBsAg antibodies. Additionally, PTα protects the retina from ischemic damage through a signaling pathway mediated by the TLR4/MD2 complex. These findings underscore the multifaceted role of PTα in immune regulation and tissue protection.
