Target Information
In mice, the Palate/Lung And Nasal Epithelium Associated Protein (PLUNC) primarily contributes to the differentiation and development of nasal and oral epithelium, and may play a role in molecular mechanisms linked to respiratory diseases. Initially identified in the nasal epithelium of mouse embryos and the trachea and bronchi of adult mice, the plunc gene exhibits a distinctive spatiotemporal expression pattern during embryonic development. Its transcription is notably upregulated starting on embryonic day 14, coinciding with the fusion of the soft palate and the nasal cavity, suggesting its involvement in the differentiation and fusion of epithelial cells. The protein encoded by the plunc gene is anticipated to be a secretory molecule, potentially playing a role in the composition of nasal or respiratory mucus.
