Target Information
The oxytocin receptor is specifically activated by oxytocin and mediates its effects through G proteins that trigger a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. Oxytocin and its receptors are crucial in reproductive processes; for instance, oxytocin facilitates childbirth and lactation by inducing contractions of uterine smooth muscles. However, mice lacking functional oxytocin receptors (like Oxtr-/-) can mate and give birth normally but fail to secrete milk effectively, resulting in the death of their offspring. In specific brain regions, such as the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, the expression of oxytocin receptors is linked to social behavior and emotional regulation. For example, oxytocin influences social learning and avoidance behavior by activating particular neuronal subpopulations.
