Target Information
Osteonectin regulates cell growth by interacting with the extracellular matrix and cytokines. It has the ability to bind calcium and copper, various types of collagen, albumin, thrombospondin, PDGF, and cell membranes. There are two calcium-binding sites: an acidic domain that binds 5 to 8 Ca2+ ions with low affinity and an EF-hand loop that binds a Ca2+ ion with high affinity. In mice, osteonectin plays a vital role in the formation, remodeling, and maintenance of bones. Its functions include supporting osteoblast differentiation, regulating angiogenesis, promoting bone mineralization, and facilitating cell-matrix interactions. Mice lacking osteonectin exhibit reduced bone formation, decreased bone density, and unbalanced bone remodeling, resulting in severe osteoporosis. Additionally, osteonectin may aid in the formation of hydroxyapatite crystals by binding to calcium ions.
