Target Information

Occludin is believed to play a role in the formation and regulation of the tight junction (TJ) paracellular permeability barrier. As a crucial membrane protein located in tight junctions, occludin exhibits significant biological importance in mice. It is one of the primary components of tight junctions, collaborating with other proteins like claudins to maintain the integrity of the intercellular barrier. Although mice lacking occludin maintain normal barrier function, occludin is essential for regulating the dynamics and integrity of tight junctions. In intestinal epithelial cells, the absence of occludin does not markedly affect the morphology or function of tight junctions but leads to compromised integrity in tissues such as gastric glands, testicular tubules, and salivary glands.
