Target Information

Nodal is a critical factor in mesoderm formation and axial patterning during embryonic development. In mice, Nodal fulfills multiple roles, including regulating the patterning of the anterior-posterior (A-P) and left-right (L-R) axes, promoting mesoderm differentiation, and influencing organ asymmetry. Nodal signaling is particularly vital in establishing left-right asymmetry in mouse embryos. On the left side of the embryo, Nodal signaling is amplified, driving the asymmetric expression of genes such as Lefty and Pitx2. This asymmetry is determined by the directional flow of fluid at the node, which is generated by the rotational movement of nodal cilia. These processes highlight the indispensable role of Nodal in orchestrating embryonic development and establishing body plan asymmetry.
