Target Information

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a protein responsible for iron trafficking, playing a role in processes such as apoptosis, innate immunity, and kidney development. It binds iron by associating with 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA), a siderophore structurally similar to bacterial enterobactin, and can either supply or remove iron from cells, depending on the situation. NGAL serves various functions in different pathological conditions, including acting as an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent, offering kidney protection, serving as a biomarker, and potentially influencing cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Studies have shown that NGAL is an early and measurable urinary biomarker for detecting cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in mouse models.
