Target Information

Nestin is crucial for the development of the brain and eyes. It facilitates the breakdown of phosphorylated vimentin intermediate filaments (IF) during mitosis and may play a role in the movement and distribution of IF proteins and other cellular components to daughter cells during the division of progenitor cells. In mice, Nestin is involved in various essential functions such as the self-renewal of neural stem cells, regulation of neurogenesis, brain repair following injury, and contributing to pathological effects in certain diseases. Nestin is significant for neurogenesis in mice; studies indicate that Nestin communicates signals from astrocytes to neural stem cells via the Notch signaling pathway, thus negatively affecting the differentiation and survival of neurons. However, Nestin expression is not essential for neurogenesis. Mice lacking Nestin (Nes-/-) do not show impaired proliferation of neural stem cells in the hippocampus's dentate gyrus, although their ability for neuronal differentiation is reduced.
