Target Information

Myoglobin is a monomeric heme protein whose primary function is to store oxygen and facilitate its diffusion within muscle tissues. It binds oxygen reversibly through a pentacoordinated heme iron, allowing for the timely and efficient release of oxygen during periods of increased demand. In mice, myoglobin serves several crucial functions, including oxygen storage and release, promoting oxygen diffusion, participating in oxidative phosphorylation, and removing reactive oxygen and nitric oxide. When myoglobin is genetically knocked out, mice develop various compensatory mechanisms to maintain physiological functions. For instance, the heart weight of myo-/- mice increases significantly, yet there are no significant changes in the ATP level, creatine phosphate content, or the activity of oxidative phosphorylation-related enzymes in their myocardium.
