Target Information

Myeloperoxidase is an integral component of the host defense system in polymorphonuclear leukocytes, playing a crucial role in microbicidal activity against a broad spectrum of organisms. In activated PMNs, MPO catalyzes the production of hypohalous acids, especially hypochlorous acid under physiological conditions, along with other toxic intermediates, significantly boosting the microbicidal effectiveness of PMNs. In mice, MPO serves various functions, including antibacterial activity, regulation of oxidative stress, modulation of vascular reactivity, and influencing inflammation and disease processes. In a mouse model of skin inflammation, MPO inhibitors have been shown to reduce the severity of plaque psoriasis, suggesting that MPO-mediated oxidative stress is a significant factor in the disease's pathology.
