Target Information

Myelin and lymphocyte protein might be involved in vesicular trafficking from the Golgi apparatus to the cell membrane. It is crucial for maintaining the myelin sheath and for interactions between axons and glial cells, as well as between glial cells themselves. Myelin and Lymphocyte Protein (MAL) is a tetraspanin protein expressed in myelin-producing cells like oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells, as well as in lymphocytes. In MAL knockout mice (MAL-/-), several myelin abnormalities have been observed, such as the separation of myelin membranes, irregularities at the nodes of Ranvier, and decreased levels of key myelin proteins like MAG, MBP, and NF155. These abnormalities indicate that MAL is vital for the stability of myelin and its interaction with axons.
