Target Information
Muscle, skeletal receptor tyrosine-protein kinase (MuSK) is a receptor tyrosine kinase that plays a pivotal role in the formation and maintenance of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), the synapse between motor neurons and skeletal muscle. The recruitment of AGRIN by LRP4 to the MUSK signaling complex triggers the phosphorylation and activation of MUSK, the complex's kinase. In MuSK-deficient mice, the absence of Agrin-induced MuSK activation results in the improper formation of neuromuscular junctions, leading to respiratory and movement disorders, ultimately causing the death of the mice. In adult mice, MuSK expression is primarily restricted to subnuclear regions located just beneath the NMJ. Denervation of these areas leads to a loss of electrical activity, which in turn reactivates MuSK expression.
