Target Information
C-C motif chemokine 2, also known as Monocyte Chemotactic Protein 1, serves as a ligand for the C-C chemokine receptor CCR2. It relays signals by binding to and activating CCR2, inducing a strong chemotactic response and mobilizing intracellular calcium ions. This chemokine exhibits chemotactic activity for monocytes and basophils but not for neutrophils or eosinophils. In mice, CCL2 performs a range of functions, including roles in inflammatory response, immune regulation, neuroprotection, disease pathology, and angiogenesis. In an alcohol-exposed mouse model, increased expression of CCL2 in astrocytes was linked to changes in behaviors related to alcohol intake, spatial learning, and associative learning. This suggests that CCL2 may influence the effects of alcohol on the central nervous system through neuroadaptive changes.
