Target Information

Monoamine Oxidase A (MAOA) catalyzes the oxidative deamination of biogenic and xenobiotic amines, playing a crucial role in the metabolism of neuroactive and vasoactive amines in both the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. It primarily oxidizes serotonin. In mice, the absence of MAOA results in a substantial increase in serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine levels in the brain. For example, MAOA knockout mice show significantly elevated serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum, along with increased dopamine levels. Additionally, the lack of MAOA leads to a marked decrease in serotonin metabolites, such as 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid.
