Target Information

Microtubule-associated protein tau facilitates the assembly and stability of microtubules and may play a role in establishing and maintaining neuronal polarity. Its C-terminus binds to axonal microtubules, while the N-terminus attaches to components of the neural plasma membrane, indicating that tau acts as a linker protein between the two. In the neuronal cell, tau localization in the cell body domain defined by the centrosome predetermines axonal polarity. Short isoforms of tau provide cytoskeletal plasticity, whereas longer isoforms are more likely involved in stabilization. In mice, tau protein functions extend beyond microtubule assembly and stability, contributing to neuronal function, the pathological mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, and interactions with other cellular processes.
