Target Information

Microalbuminuria is an early indicator of diabetic nephropathy (DN) and has been identified as a crucial factor in diabetes-related kidney dysfunction through studies in mouse models. Its onset is linked to various factors, including an increased glomerular filtration rate, impaired tubular reabsorption, and structural and functional alterations in tubular epithelial cells. In mouse models of diabetic nephropathy, such as db/db mice and KK-Ay mice, significant levels of microalbuminuria are observed. For instance, db/db mice exhibit microalbuminuria at 8 weeks of age, with urinary albumin excretion markedly higher than in normal controls. Additionally, research has highlighted that increased glomerular filtration rate and impaired tubular reabsorption are key mechanisms contributing to microalbuminuria. Certain genes and molecules have been found to play significant roles in the development of microalbuminuria. For example, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) expression is markedly increased in the renal tubules of db/db mice, and its elevated urine secretion level may facilitate the occurrence of microalbuminuria.
