Target Information

Melanin performs vital functions in mice across various aspects. It is a pigment produced by melanocytes in the skin, serving key roles such as protecting the skin and eyes from UV damage, regulating body temperature, and occasionally contributing to camouflage and social behavior. Melanin functions as an antioxidant and absorbs UV radiation, thereby safeguarding the skin and eyes from photoaging and conditions like age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Additionally, melanin is crucial for light absorption in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), aiding in the maintenance of retinal function. In mice, the melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) acts as an important neuropeptide that influences energy balance and behavior by interacting with the melanin-concentrating hormone receptor 1 (MCHR1).
