Target Information
Matrix Metalloproteinase 8 (MMP-8), also known as neutrophil collagenase, is capable of degrading fibrillar types I, II, and III collagens. It may contribute to the breakdown of collagen fibers during uterine involution. In mice, the functions of MMP-8 are diverse and intricate, encompassing roles in angiogenesis, atherosclerosis, inflammatory responses, tumor metastasis, arthritis, neurobehavior, and airway remodeling. MMP-8 facilitates the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells by degrading type I collagen and angiotensin II (Ang II), thereby influencing the formation of new intima and the size of atherosclerotic plaques. Mice lacking MMP-8 exhibit smaller plaques and reduced invasion of vascular smooth muscle cells in atherosclerosis models.
