Target Information
Macrophage metalloelastase, also known as Mmp12, is involved in tissue injury and remodeling, exhibiting significant elastolytic activity. It can accommodate both large and small amino acids at the P1' site, with a preference for leucine. In mice, Mmp12 plays crucial roles in various biological processes, including immune regulation, inflammatory response, tissue remodeling, tumorigenesis, and metabolism. In models of smoking-induced emphysema, the absence of Mmp12 significantly reduces lung inflammation and fibrosis development. In studies of pulmonary fibrosis, Mmp12 contributes to immune cell infiltration and fibrosis progression by degrading elastin in the extracellular matrix.
