Target Information

Lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) is a key component of the innate immune response. It binds to the lipid A portion of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), a glycolipid found in the outer membrane of all Gram-negative bacteria, acting as an affinity enhancer for CD14 and facilitating its interaction with LPS. In mice, LBP regulates immune responses through various mechanisms, such as amplifying the biological activity of LPS, promoting the activation of immune cells, neutralizing LPS toxicity, maintaining intestinal barrier function, and influencing disease development. By forming a complex with LPS, LBP accelerates the activation of neutrophils and macrophages, thereby strengthening the body's infection resistance. For instance, mice lacking LBP exhibit higher mortality rates and more severe inflammatory responses when infected with E. coli peritonitis.
